  • 1 digital game

  • 25 free online workshops

  • 331 participants

  • July 2021 to December 2022

  • A WASA Games project

  • Ce projet a été réalisé grâce au soutien financier du gouvernement du Québec et du Bureau du design de la Ville de Montréal dans le cadre de l'appel de propositions « Développer ensemble une plus forte culture du design »

This game is a digital extension of City Builders. Participants learn the impact of urban design on the environment. Designed for citizens to gain tools to get involved in civic participation and to bridge the gap between city planners, urbanists, and citizens. Teams build infrastructures, refurbish streets, and propose regulations related to urban design to respond to needs when facing social challenges and climate emergencies caused partly by the lack of density. The game includes 4 game worlds, 9 levels, and 12 player roles.

This project offered us a low-cost opportunity to adapt our successful physical experience, City Builders, into a digital playful workshop. We used Mural and Zoom to develop a code-free minimum viable prototype.

“[After the workshop], I better understand the difference between actual and perceived density and how space configuration plays a key role in user experience.”

— Participant, translated from French

“I learned that densification doesn't always mean building upwards.”

— Participant, translated from French

"I really enjoyed it; it's an original and accessible way to learn. The issues addressed [in the game] are diverse and reflect reality well."
